The 9th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 42 Brigade, 14th Division arrived in France on 19th May, 1915 and went into the trenches for the first time on 6th June when they were attached to 5th Division for trench training at St Eloi, in the southern part of the Ypres salient. Although they were only here for one day and despite the fact that this was a quiet sector of the line at the time, the battalion did sustain some casualties, mostly from sniper fire.  One of these was John Plimmer who was shot in the kidneys. The records show that he died from these wounds on the following day, 8th June, but the battalion diary recorded that he died three days later.
